Underweight, Stunting Prevalent Among Davao Region children

The 8th national nutrition survey conducted by the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) reveals that 6 out of 10 Filipino households suffer from poor nutrition. Under nutrition hinders mental and physical development while over nutrition leads to obesity and chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. In Davao region, the results of a 2011 DOST-FNRI survey indicate that 20% of children aged 0-5 years old, and 33% of school-age children are underweight for their age. The survey was conducted in Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and Compostela Valley. The same survey reveals that stunting, being underheight-for-age, is high among 0-5 year-old and school-age children. The physical condition is an indicator of chronic malnutrition. These nutrition problems often result from poor eating habits, like skipping meals such as breakfast, or having an unbalanced diet, and can lead to poor school and […]

Procter & Gamble Philippines, through Safeguard, takes Global Handwashing Day to the next level. “Itaas ang iyong mga kamay!!” (Raise your hands) The world celebrated the 8th Global Handwashing Day (GHD)  last OCTOBER 15. It was the brainchild of  the Global Private-Public Partnership for Handwashing in 2008 to increase awareness of the importance of handwashing with soap. Here in the Philippines, Procter and Gamble (P&G), through its flagship soap brand Safeguard, is not only one of the founding members of this partnership, but also continues to be a key advocate of GHD. This year was no different as Safeguard Philippines brought this annual celebration simultaneously to three major cities: Manila, Cebu and Davao. Here in Davao, me and my other blogger friends became part of the celebration as we trooped to Buhangin Central Elementary School to join the kids, parents and teachers . This year’s local theme “Linis Lusog sa Global Handwashing Day” focused […]

Domex “Fiesta” Video Brings Awareness for Clean Toilets, Germ-free Communities

Imagine this scene typically played out during fiestas: People rushing to the streets, drawn to the sound of a marching band. Everyone is smiling, eager to see the “star” of the celebration. Now up on Youtube, it shows how underprivileged Filipinos welcome the “arrival” of clean toilet facilities in their communities. “The video aims to make people realize the value of a toilet which most of us, unfortunately, take for granted,” said Dennis Chua, Domex Brand Manager. The “Fiesta” video contributes to the efforts of Domex’s One Million Clean Toilets Movement. My Skin Origins Zumba Party

Zumba has become one very popular form of dancercise (coined term for dance and exercise) in the recent years. If you have a love and hate relationship with doing exercise regularly, zumba might just change this. Zumba is a fusion of aerobics and dance routines. Although it is commonly identified with latin dance steps such as samba, salsa, mambo and merengue, Zumba also has hiphop and martial arts movements in it making it really interesting. It is far from being boring and it makes you sweat,  you wouldn’t even notice that an hour has passed. (one hour zumba group sessions is offered in most local gyms). I’ve been doing Zumba at least twice a week in the last two years and I can truly say, it gives me a different high. I always look forward to attending Zumba sessions because I’ve gained new friends who never fail to motivate me […]
